Map ≠ Territory: Power, Technology and Mediation in Contemporary Sound Art
- Sam Risser (Canadá)
“In their engagement with new technologies, do artists help to reinforce a “culture of disposability?”
“In what ways does technology help to create and reinforce certain ideological frameworks related to truth in representation?”
“Are there approaches which stand at odds with certain social and ecological motivations?”
Certain ‘lo-fi’ approaches to sound-art offer not only an aesthetic response to current paradigms but may also represent ways in which practitioners may work against the forward march and tacit valorization of high-technology and extractive capitalist economics. ‘Map ≠ Territory’ seeks to examine these questions and broaden the discourse surrounding technological mediation in an attempt to build an ‘audio-culture’ which is more self-critical and inclusive.
Sam Risser is a sound-artist and musician living and working in Montréal Québec where he is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Electroacoustic Studies at Concordia University. Utilizing a variety of techniques, his work attempts to investigate and problematize the intersection of power and technology in artistic production and consumption.
